The Need for Transversal Work

A comprehensive perspective that incorporates the opinions of the various actors and services is required for policy making. Given that different contents, objectives and competencies vie with each other for attention in the health and urban environment policy areas, a multifaceted approach to the consideration of such matters is essential.

Traditional urban interventions do not fully consider the potential effects of the urban environment on human health. A transversal and interdisciplinary approach allows urban development interventions to be more comprehensive and efficient. Specifically, the public health perspective makes it possible to avoid specific risks and foster balance in the city.

Transversal work means accepting that your own scope will be scrutinised by people from other scopes and that both information and the corridors of power must be shared. This favours the creation of collective knowledge and the empowerment of the agents involved as they become more active and more visible.

 

OBJECTIVE

  • Foster cooperation between different areas related to urban planning and health.
  • Jointly analyse the factors that intervene in urban planning from a comprehensive and multifaceted perspective that goes beyond the actors directly involved in order to generate collective knowledge that can be applied to both diagnoses and potential proposals.
  • Provide councils with better service through collaboration, exchanges and multidisciplinary, transversal work.

PROPOSALS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Develop comprehensive initiatives by considering all the sectoral projects that affect a particular scope without having to resort to regulated instruments.
  • Foster transversal work in the coordination of projects and the preparation of specific materials in order to implement a joint, strategic approach to urban space and health.
  • Have clear leadership with the capacity to issue relevant instructions arising from collective work and with the legitimacy required to ensure their implementation.
  • Establish inter-sectoral collaboration resources and tools. Mix teams from different departments, not only to enrich the project thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of their collaboration, but also to guarantee relations on a human level. In short, it is necessary to organise projects in such a way that horizontal and cooperative structures are generated.
