Report on the progress of the SDGs in 100 Spanish cities

On Tuesday 16 October, the Spanish Sustainable Development Network (REDS) published the report “Mirando hacia el futuro: ciudades sostenibles. Los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible en 100 ciudades españolas” (Towards the future: sustainable cities. The Sustainable Development Goals in 100 Spanish cities).

The report reviews progress towards implementing the SDGs in Spain's major cities. A total of 100 cities (including all provincial capitals and the dozen metropolitan areas containing more than one town of over 80,000 inhabitants) were examined, representing around 50% of the Spanish population.

The towns and cities covered in Barcelona province were Badalona, Barcelona, Cornellà de Llobregat, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Mataró, Sabadell, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Terrassa.

The report identified a range of quantitative indicators for each city and SDG so that the degree of implementation could be assessed using data from official sources throughout the country. These indicators provide a snapshot of progress on this issue, giving an idea of municipalities' current position with regard to sustainable development.

The report contains an extremely interesting collection of local indicators, and is a useful tool providing real statistical data that can be used as a benchmark for adapting municipal policies to the SDGs.
