BCN Smart Rural es desenvolupa en l’espai no metropolità de la demarcació de Barcelona. Dels 7.728,17 km2 de superfície d’aquesta demarcació, el 73,26% correspon a l’àmbit del BCN Smart Rural.

Es treballa, especialment, en 5 territoris pilot: Berguedà, Lluçanès, Moianès, Parc Rural del Montserrat i Vall del Ges, Orís i Bisaura.

La població de l’àmbit del BCN Smart Rural representa el 21,56% (1.191.161 habitants) del total de la demarcació de Barcelona (5.523.922 habitants) i amb una densitat de població de 210 hab/ km2.
