El Molí Blanc lime kiln

A lime kiln is a traditional construction in which limestone is heated to obtain lime. The kiln was usually a hole (pot) walled up to ground surface.

The process of obtaining lime involved keeping the limestone at about 1,000ºC for ten or twelve days, using wood as fuel. The chemical equation for the reaction is: CaCO3 + calor → CaO + CO2.

Years ago, lime was one of the most essential elements for our society: it was used in all manner of construction work, as a cohesive element of the mortar; houses were whitewashed; doctors prescribed lime water; vineyards were sprinkled with lime; it was used to disinfect pigs...
